Hilltop House - Mountain Landing, New Zealand

Now that the editorial situation has become more clear I can finally post some of the photographs from my shoot last November of the "Hilltop House" in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand for Terry Hunziker and Cheshire Architects. cheshire-mtnlanding1

Sitting on 1000 acres in the heart of the Bay of Islands Mountain Landing is a truly stunning setting and one of the most remarkable places I've ever been. The owner has spent over a decade painstakingly "developing" the property - planting over 2 million trees and plants from seed (there's an impressive full-time plant nursery on site), building paths and footbridges, and thoughtfully designating potential homesites. It's not uncommon to come across perfectly manicured scenes like this while wandering the property:

Cheshire Architects did a wonderful job of creating a thoroughly beautiful modern home using a traditional New Zealand countryside vernacular - from a distance the house looks like it could be a barn or farmland cottage. And Terry Hunziker's interiors bring a warm comfortable elegance to the relatively large living spaces.

Protege Update

It's been a little over a year now since The Protege came on board here at Aaron Leitz Photography and things are progressing nicely. devin2

He's been dressing more appropriately and not dropping things as much. And I'm a lot more at ease these days when traveling on assignment now that I have The Protege to help with final gear check and packing....

I'm in San Francisco this week photographing a few residential projects. Had an afternoon free and walked over and took a few photographs of Saint Mary's Cathedral in the Japantown neighborhood. It's an interesting monolith of a building.

Chicago Strollin'

Here are some scenes I came across while searching for good places to eat and drink beer....

The Chicago Way

In Chicago for a few days this week...

Dinner tonight at Rick Bayless' Frontera Grill: house guacamole, chicken mole enchilada and a champagne margarita = delicious.

Of course Chicago is legendary for its architecture.

So it wasn't surprising to see this McDonald's on the stroll downtown...

The DMZ

View of the Joint Security Area of the Korean Demilitarized Zone from Dora Outpost. Look closely and you'll see the flags of both North and South Korea flying on opposite ends of the zone.

View after being yelled at for taking photographs beyond the designated line.
